Scripture Focus: Mark 10:38
What does it mean to give? In Mark’s gospel, Jesus challenges the disciples—and us—to think about what we’re able to give, not in terms of what we gain, but in terms of the sacrificial love that marks the life of a true disciple. Jesus speaks of the cup He drinks and the baptism He undergoes, asking if we’re willing to share in that same commitment.
Tithing and giving aren’t just about meeting a budget—they’re about reflecting the generous, sacrificial heart of Jesus. As Christians, we are called to give from what we have, not out of obligation, but out of a deep desire to serve and honor God. Jesus didn’t give because He had to; He gave because it was His nature to give, even at great personal cost.
As we consider our own g
iving, let’s be honest with ourselves about our motivations. Are we giving with a heart that mirrors the sacrificial love of Christ, or are we holding back, seeking something in return? Let’s commit to tithing and giving as a reflection of our faith, trusting that God will use our gifts to further His kingdom, no matter the state of the budget.
Prayer: “Gracious God, You have blessed us with so many gifts—the cup we drink, the baptism we share, the life we live in You. As we reflect on these blessings, help us to give as freely and generously as Jesus did. Let our giving not be driven by a desire for reward, but by a desire to serve You and Your kingdom. May we stay true to ourselves, giving from what we have, not seeking to gain what is not ours. As we tithe, may it be a reflection of our trust in You, regardless of our circumstances, knowing that You are faithful to provide. Help us to be stewards who give with a sacrificial heart. Amen.”
