Here at Harrison we encourage you to get involved in a service opportunity, be it one of the ministries that is sponsored by our Missions team, or any other ministry that you have a passion for. The Missions team sponsors and partners with ministries on a local, national and international level with the goal of serving those in need by being the hands and feet of Jesus.
Serving Opportunities
An Opportunity to Serve Our Neighbors!
As you know, each Thursday morning, Harrison serves as a mobile pantry location for Loaves and Fishes. You may not be familiar with another Loaves and Fishes program that serves folks in Charlotte who are also food insecure. Because these families may not have transportation, The Home Delivery Program enlists volunteers to pick up and deliver boxes to them on Tuesday, Thursday, and/or Saturday mornings. Volunteers may sign up online as often as their schedule permits.
Requirements to make deliveries include:
• Must be able to pick up boxes on specified box pickup day.
• Must be able to deliver boxes the same day no later than 2 pm.
• Must be healthy and at least 18 years old if driving alone.
• Must have a personal vehicle with space for food boxes.
• Must be able to lift 25 pounds repetitively.
To learn more about this program, you may log on to www.loavesandfishes.org or contact Dawn Bruner, one of our Harrison Home Delivery volunteers at dmbrunersc@gmail.com
Dawn will be glad to answer your questions, and if interested, you may ride along on one of her volunteer days.
Ongoing Mission Ministries
Roof Above - Urban Ministry and Men’s Shelter of Charlotte have merged into one organization that is called ROOF ABOVE. Since the outbreak of COVID, they have worked diligently to find a safe way to house homeless men, women, and children during the cold winter months. This season instead of being housed in churches through the ROOM IN THE INN program, those without homes have an opportunity to seek social distancing shelter at various ROOF ABOVE sites. These sites will need donations from individuals, churches, and the community, similar to the food items we provided in past years through our ROOM IN THE INN. CLICK HERE to learn how you can help!
English as a second language - ESL is a community outreach program for international adults who want to learn the English language and American culture in a Christian setting. Classes are broken into four levels of skill and study. In addition to teaching English skills, devotions are encouraged. Please CLICK HERE to learn more.
Backpack Ministry – You can donate food for this ministry or help with packing the backpacks, which are distributed through Pineville and Sterling Elementary Schools. Contact: Larry Robinson
Loaves & Fishes Food Pantry – We operate a mobile pantry on Harrison Church campus once a week on Thursdays, 10:00 – 11:00. If you know of anyone in need please suggest that they contact Loaves and Fishes at 704-523-4333 and get a referral so they may then pick up groceries at any area mobile pantry.
We are not asking for general donations at this time since boxed food for distribution arrives on the mobile pantry truck. As an alternative, please consider taking your donations directly to the Loaves & Fishes warehouse, or make a financial donation (see loavesandfishes.org). THANK YOU for your support of the food pantry!
Beds Equal Dreams – a homegrown ministry to build beds for children in our local communities. You can help build the beds at one of our build-a-bed events, donate a bedding kit or help to distribute the beds. Contact: Beds Equal Dreams
Charlotte Rescue Mission – a Christ-based program for men recovering from addictions. The men of Harrison Church serve breakfast the 1st Sunday of every month. Contact: Wallace Hutchinson
Haiti (international mission) – Harrison Church sponsors a school in Cap Haitian, College John Wesley and offers the opportunity to travel to the school on an annual basis. We also have a medical mission at the same school. For more information contact Patsy Sheppard.
Red Bird Mission (Kentucky) - serving a mission of the United Methodist Church in a very poor rural area of eastern Kentucky, Harrison Church sponsors a mission trip in April each year. To find out more about Red Bird Mission you can visit the website www.rbmission.org Contact: Bob Gourlay
