Here at Harrison we encourage you to get involved in a service opportunity, be it one of the ministries that is sponsored by our Missions team, or any other ministry that you have a passion for. The Missions team sponsors and partners with ministries on a local, national and international level with the goal of serving those in need by being the hands and feet of Jesus.
Backpack Ministry –The Harrison Church Backpack Ministry serves children in need at Pineville and Sterling Elementary Schools. Throughout the school year, this ministry provides enough food for two daily meals and snacks over the weekend for children that participate in school breakfast/lunch programs and who also register for the weekend assistance. You can donate food for this ministry or help with packing the backpacks, which are distributed through Pineville and Sterling Elementary Schools. Click here for the list of items to donate. Beds Equal Dreams – A homegrown ministry to build beds for children in our local communities. You can help build the beds at one of our build-a-bed events, donate a bedding kit or help to distribute the beds. Contact: Beds Equal Dreams
Charlotte Rescue Mission – A Christ-based program for men recovering from addictions. Harrison Church serves dinner on the 1st Sunday of February, April, June, August, October and December. The men of Harrison Church serve breakfast the 1st Sunday of every month. Contact: Brenda Johnson (church-wide) or Wallace Hutchinson (men)
Dove’s Nest – The women’s branch of the Charlotte Rescue Mission. Every Sunday a group of ladies are transported to and from the 9:45 a.m. worship service. Also, on Wednesday mornings a crafts workshop is held. To volunteer with this ministry, contact Ron Sheppard (Sunday transportation) or Lauren Worsham (crafts).
English as a Second Language -ESL is a community outreach program for international adults who want to learn the English language and American culture in a Christian setting. ESL classes meet September through April of each year. We offer classes on Tuesday and Wednesday mornings from 9:30 to 11:30 and classes on Tuesday and Thursday evenings from 7:00 to 9:00. Classes meet in Building 100 on the Harrison Church campus. Classes are broken into four levels of skill and study. In addition to teaching English skills, devotions are encouraged. Haiti (international mission) – Harrison Church sponsors a school in Cap Haitian, College John Wesley and offers the opportunity to travel to the school on an annual basis. There is also a medical mission at the same school. For more information contact Patsy Sheppard.
Loaves & Fishes Food Pantry – Loaves & Fishes pantries provide nutritionally balanced groceries to individuals and families in who are in a short-term crisis. The food pantry is open on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 10 a.m. until 1 p.m. and on the 1st and 3rd Saturdays from 9 a.m. to 12 noon. Donations of non-perishable food items are always welcomed. Red Bird Mission (Kentucky) – Serving a mission of the United Methodist Church in a very poor rural area of eastern Kentucky, Harrison Church sponsors a mission trip in April each year. To find out more about Red Bird Mission you can visit the website www.rbmission.org Contact: Bob Gourlay
Room in the Inn – During the coldest months of the year, Harrison Church hosts 12 of our homeless neighbors, providing hot dinner / breakfast and a safe, warm place to spend the night – Saturday nights / Sunday mornings.
